This third publication of ‘Cahiers du CEFAS’ –previously named ‘Cahiers du CFEY’- results from a partnership with the Yemeni Genetic Resources Center (YGRC) and consists of 19 articles selected from the seminar The place of ancient agricultural practices and techniques in Yemen today : problems and perspectives, held in June 2000, at the Faculty of Agriculture of Sanaa University and in the CEFAS. More than 30 anthropologists, archaeologists, geographers, historians, agronomists and development specialists, from Yemen and abroad, participated in the meetings. Far from being a nostalgic point of view on a potentially ‘unchanging’ Yemeni agriculture, protected from any ‘harmful’ modernisation of its practices and techniques, and at the same time, far from discrediting ‘excessive’ technological improvements and their effects on environment or food quality, this seminar was clearly dedicated to sharing ideas related to development operations in this mainly rural country, where any development policy has to, in all cases, rely upon farmers’ labour.

The volume AL-KHARJ II presents the results of the French-Saudi archaeological mission in the Al-Kharj oasis, Saudi Arabia, obtained during the third and fourth field seasons (2013, 2015). This research aims to elucidate the settlement dynamics and the environmental context in which they occurred in a key region of Central Arabia, from prehistory to the Islamic period. The geomorphological studies (Chapter 1) conducted around the paleolake of Al-Hayāthim confirm significant climatic fluctuations, correlated with sporadic human occupations.Surveys and excavations in the Rufāʿ graben (Chapter 2) led to the discovery of a series of Middle Paleolithic sites, including a stratified site, Umm al-Shaʿal (AK-31). The dominant industries (Nubian-type Levallois) support the hypothesis of an early dispersal of Homo sapiens in Central Arabia, within a then more humid environment. The Bronze Age necropolis of ʿAyn al-Ḍilaʿ 1 (Chapter 3), the largest in the oasis, comprises over 3,000 tombs of various types. Five tombs were excavated, revealing primary burials from the Early Bronze Age and the reuse of tombs during the Iron Age.A significant portion of the volume is dedicated to the site of Al-Yamāma (Chapters 4–6), identified as the medieval city of Jaww al-Khiḍrima. The excavation of the great mosque and its immediate surroundings reveals the presence, beneath a mosque dated to the 16th–18th centuries, of one of the earliest mosques in the Arabian Peninsula documented in an archaeological context (late 7th–early 8th century CE). Pre-Islamic domestic occupation of the area (4th–3rd century BCE) confirms the long-term settlement of the site and sheds light on the emergence of the first sedentary establishments in the region. A similar chronological sequence is evidenced in a more southern test pit of the Al-Yamāma site (Chapter 6).The archaeobotanical (Chapter 7) and zooarchaeological (Chapter 8) analyses conducted at Al-Yamāma provide insights into an oasis economy that emerged in the mid-1st millennium BCE and remained relatively conservative over the long term.Complementing the elements presented in a previous volume (AL-KHARJ I), these discoveries illuminate a region that remains, to this day, one of the least studied in the Arabian Peninsula.

It aims to present a joint reflection on experiences in gender and development projects, and to join in the debate they foster not only in Yemen, but on a much wider scale as well, beyond cultural and contextual particularities. This initiative connects with practical and critical research concerned with the transnational promotion of civil society, participation, empowerment and capacity building through various development and assistance schemes. It is divided up into two parts: firstly, a contribution by Blandine Destremau, aiming to provide a sense of perspective to the patterns of development implemented and experimented in Yemen, by sketching a critical history of ideas and institutions dealing with issues of gender and development. Secondly, an impact assessment carried out in the field by Maggy Grabundzija, an anthropologist, focusing on two projects funded by the French Social Development Fund, chosen for their engagement in girls' education in rural areas.

Since its political independence in 1961, Kuwait’s rapid modernization has driven an aggressive building race transforming the city-state while fracturing the delicate balance between material growth and social preservation. This critical journalistic compilation centers on Dr. George Saba Shiber, a visionary Palestinian-American urban planner who arrived in 1960 and became a foundational voice in Pan-Arab urban studies. Shiber resisted the homogenizing, tabula rasa approach of Western contractors who systematically dismantled the “medieval” fabric of "Old Kuwait" to make way for expansive highways and individualistic lifestyles. Through his seminal books, The Kuwait Urbanization (1964) and Recent Arab City Growth (1969), he championed a "slow urbanism" that fused modern Western engineering with the vernacular, human-scale heritage of Arab history, urging regional leaders to pursue an authentic architectural renaissance rather than succumb to profit-driven, superficial aesthetics.Beyond his technical blueprints, Shiber exercised immense influence as a public intellectual and "journalist hobbyist," contributing extensively to the Kuwait Times and the broader Arab press. He viewed journalism as a profound moral duty, framing the Arab editor as a vital social leader responsible for guiding public opinion and professionalizing the media landscape—a commitment that directly fueled his support for the first Arab Journalists Conference and the establishment of the Kuwait Journalists Association in 1964. Despite his expatriate status, Shiber delivered uncompromising, transparent observations of the local political economy, seamlessly weaving hard demographic data with references to classical philosophy, Islamic tradition, and sharp cultural observations of Kuwaiti aesthetics and architecture. Ultimately, this compilation frames Shiber as a vital eyewitness to history who used the written word to resist the erasure of cultural memory, proving that physically building a city is intimately tied to a nation's sovereign right to write its own history.

This study offers a french original translation and a comparative study of two Yemeni Laws: the Yemeni Association Act of 2001, and its executive decree of 2004. It contributes to a better understanding of the legal settings that have framed the development of the Yemeni Association Movement in the 2000s, after its first boom following the institution of the multiparty system in 1990.

The multiplication of non-governmental associations at the end of the nineties in Yemen, accompanied by the Yemeni legislation (law of 2001) represents a major social phenomenon, in as much as it is contemporary with the growth of foreign aids directly granted to the NGO’s in a “participatory” way. It is also concomitant with a decentralization process initiated by the State and meant to reinforce the local authorities. This blossoming of new themes like development, human rights, women promotion and environment is but a continuation from a dynamic civil society which had distinguished itself during the 20th century by charity action, union and political militancy, cooperative development and a traditional society rich in solidarity mechanisms. What represents this new phase for the development of civil society and democracy in Yemen? This is the question which the Yemeni and foreign contributors try to answer in this book.
Paul Dresch Rules of Barat presents several eighteenth-century agreements among tribesmen from Jabal Barat, north-east of Yemen. These documents, previously unedited, shed new light on the history of customary law ('urf) in Yemen.

During the long history of Islamic Yemen, scholars have found in certain places, sometimes called Hiğra, a favorable environment for teaching and learning.
